About this information

Namela Care brings together official lists of healthcare facilities from across South Africa and shows the source and date of every detail. Namela is not a register and does not license, inspect or rate facilities.

Public or private

Public facility. The source says a public health authority runs it.

Private facility. The source says a private organisation runs it.

Ownership unknown. The source does not say. Namela never decides this from a facility’s name.

What the labels mean

From an official source. Taken from a named government list, or from an operator’s own list where that is said. Namela has not checked it further.

Checked by Namela. Two Namela reviewers confirmed it with the facility or the authority. Nothing is marked this way yet.

Being checked. Sources disagree, or a rule holds the value back until someone confirms it.

Not available yet. No source found. It does not mean the facility lacks it.

A detail past its review date is marked “Due for checking”. Namela never renews a label without checking again.

Registration and licensing

A facility appearing on a list is not proof that it is registered or licensed. Namela shows registration only where it has been checked with the responsible authority, and shows “Registration information unavailable” otherwise. A missing record does not mean a facility is not registered. A health worker’s professional registration says nothing about a facility’s licence.

When one facility appears in several lists

Namela combines records only when the full name, the province and the district agree and the facility types do not conflict. Similar names are never enough. Records that might be the same place are kept apart and checked by two reviewers. Every source record behind a listing is shown on its page.

When sources disagree

Both values are kept and the detail is marked “Being checked”. The authority responsible for that kind of information decides.

When a facility disappears from a list

It is not deleted. It is flagged for a reviewer, because lists drop, rename and move facilities.

Fair listing

Facilities are sorted by name. Nobody can pay to be listed, to appear higher or to change a label.
